I feel like the reason Troy and Abed are like this is because they never had a best friend like this as kids. Troy had a lot of friends, but no best friend. Abed had no friends but TV. They had to squeeze the entire childhood they should have spent together into a few short years in college.
He’s right. Things are bad, but we’re together. That makes this the perfect timeline.
